What We Do

Appreciation of the Art Deco Style
ADSWA promotes awareness in the community of the importance of good examples of 20th century design in particular the art deco style. It encourages appreciation of the cultural heritage value of the buildings from the era between the world wars (1920-1940). This is done through its popular program of talks, discovery walks, conducted tours, enjoyable social events, and informative quarterly Waltzing Moderne newsletter. The Society's Annual Awards celebrate the best Western Australian Art Deco buildings, their architects and designers or their modern restoration/conservation.

Identification and Preservation
ADSWA has compiled a comprehensive inventory of over 1000 Art Deco buildings in Western Australia and has been instrumental in having many of these classified and/or heritage listed.

The Society works closely with the National Trust (WA) to identify, record and preserve the most significant buildings for future generations.

Conservation and Renovation
Preservation/conservation of a building is difficult unless a viable use can be established. Many owners and developers seek guidance on the conservation/restoration of their properties from ADSWA because of its proactive approach and the professional expertise of its members.

ADSWA also provides guidance to members on renovation and restoration of residences. Limited advice is available on colour schemes, materials and finishes. Because of the not-for-profit nature of ADSWA, members are referred to suitably qualified and sympathetic professional practitioners of the style for more extensive input and professional services.

Reference Material and Resources
The Society holds a library on the Art Deco subject for the use of members. We also have comprehensive materials and photographic records on the most significant buildings from the period. Extensive files of newspaper clippings and other items of interest relating to the age are maintained.
